What Foods You Can Eat On The Carnivore Diet (and What You Can’t)

Last Updated By Victor Townsend

What Foods Can You Eat On The Carnivore Diet

Below contains a list of what foods you can eat on the carnivore diet. I made this list because one of the most common questions that spring up as someone considers exploring the life of a raw eating lean-beating carnivore machine type of diets is:

What foods can you eat on the carnivore diet?

After giving them the shockingly short answer to the question, they usually respond with:

…but can I eat that?

Or insert one of the dozens of different foods in that question and it will be what I get asked on a daily basis. So I’ve been wanting to make this guide on what you eat on a carnivore diet to refer people who ask these types of questions.

In this post, we answer all of your nightmares and confusion concerning whether or not you can eat mayo on the sandwich you were planning on eating for lunch next week.

We talk about what you can and what you can’t eat on the carnivore diet based on the questions I have received. I always get the same specific foods that people inquire about as you would imagine. Below is the list of the foods that I get asked the most about whether or not you can eat it.

Can You Eat That On The Carnivore Diet?

Eggs

This post is all about whether or not you can and should eat eggs on the carnivore diet. Well, should you? Do you think you should? What’re inside eggs? What are the nutrient contents? I wrote an entire post explaining whether or not you eat eggs on the carnivore diet here.

Beef Jerky

Can you eat beef jerky on the carnivore diet?

You bet you can. In fact, beef jerky is your new best friend. He’s a little fatty, but don’t worry. A little fat is a good thing. And a lot of fat is even better!

Avocados

I wouldn’t recommend you eat avocados on the carnivore diet.

Why? Simple. Avocados are a full-plant product. It’s a plant. Carnivores do not eat plants.

But avocados are so healthy! They have all the healthy essential fats you need!

Oh yeah?

Says who… the doctors that don’t care about your health at all that became doctors for the status from modern society? Eat your fat from animal products. Animal foods. Steak, ground beef, that’s your fat. And it’s better fat than even what a magical avocado could ever give you.

Bacon

Eating bacon is one of my favorite foods to eat on the meat-eating diet. Yes, can you eat bacon on the carnivore diet. And eat a lot of it.

Butter

I eat a lot of butter as a carnivore. Put some in a pan to coat the pan before cooking your steak and eggs. I’m particularly generous with the amount of butter I use because I need the extra fat from butter.

Chicken

Yes, you eat chicken, fried chicken, or chicken wings on the carnivore diet. But it’s not recommended. Why eat chicken? It’s got no fat. That alone should be enough of a reason not to eat it. The fat is the cure. No fat in chicken. No chicken. Yes, you can eat it, but why? Eat your red meats instead.

Dairy

Yes, you can eat dairy on this diet. Eating butter and eggs is fine. In fact butter is essential especially at first because of it’s high saturated fat content. When you first start out, reaching the high amounts of fat will be challenging at first. Butter is a good way to help you get enough fat for the day.

Fat

Can you eat fat on the carnivore diet?

Not only can you eat fat, but eating fat on the carnivore diet is the same as playing golf with a golf club. Not only is it essential, but it’s mandatory. You need to eat fat and a lot of it.

Your intake of foods should be primarily fat. Primarily saturated fats.

If you’re about to eat meat that doesn’t have much fat, you shouldn’t even eat it. Saturated fat is what cures you. The fact is what revitalizes you. It’s what restores your health.

Fish

Fish is an “animal product”, fish is meat, so yes you can eat fish as a carnivore. I eat sardines a lot because they’re quick, easy, and delicious. Despite what most people think about sardines, they taste amazing. Try them if you haven’t. They taste just like chicken.

Fruit

Eating fruit on the carnivore diet is forbidden. The fruit is the poison that 99.99% of modern society is consuming without any knowledge that’s based on solid data. One of the common statements you here frequently is.

Fruit should be avoided entirely if you’re on the carnivore diet. Fruit is the number one food we try to avoid. Sugar is the main culprit that we strive to avoid since it’s the primary cause of most illnesses and ailments. The common theme we hear is, when people try to include fruit in their diet, they feel worse. When they remove it again, they feel better.

Ham

Eating ham on the carnivore diet is one of your choices for meat. If you’re starting out and just can’t take another ribeye. Switch to ham for some different flavor. If you’re feeling risky, get a spiral honey ham.

Honey

Eating honey on the carnivore diet is risky business. Honey is an animal product and we do advocate eating only animal products. However, honey is pure sugar. Sugar, in general, is arguably the worst thing you can put in your body. I’ve heard about some carnivores experimenting with adding honey into their diet. I haven’t dug into the data and results from those people yet. When I do, I’ll be posting them right here on the Carnivores World and let you know when I do.

Hot Dogs

Nothing beats an old fashioned American hot dog, even on the carnivore diet. If you decide to include hot dogs into your meat selection. Keep in mind, it’s still a hotdog. It’s still processed. Even though it is meat, has no carbohydrates or sugar.

Mayo

Mayo is not on the list for the meat-eating carnivore. The same goes for other toppings like ketchup.

Milk

Milk is an animal product and can be consumed on the carnivore diet. However, most milk products are loaded with hormones and other toxic products. The whole point of this diet is to become healthy. All animal products are not created equally. If you do decide to add milk to your diet, try to only buy organic fresh milk. Most people who do include milk with the carnivore diet, drive out to farmers and negotiate a deal with them so they can buy fresh milk straight from the tap.

Mushrooms

Ah, mushrooms, the vegetarian’s meat. But it’s just that, vegetarian meat.

It’s not real meat.

Mushrooms aren’t plants and they’re not animals. In this way of eating, we stick to animal products.

So if you’re still wondering if you can eat mushrooms on the carnivore diet, as good as they taste, you should not eat them if you’re trying to stick to the all-meat diet.

Nuts

I could write a book about how nuts affect your body and overall health. Let’s just say avoiding any and all nuts on this diet would be beneficial for you. There are legitimate and even lethal allergic reactions that can occur from nuts. Most people are “fine” eating peanuts, or so they think.

Just because your throat doesn’t close shut after eating a peanut, doesn’t mean your body isn’t experiencing side effects from consuming them. Peanuts and many other foods cause me to break out quite severely.

Guess what, I never connected the two at all. I never thought of nuts being the food that has been causing my acne for my entire life. It was only after eliminating all foods but a few and then slowly re-introducing a different food that was common to me throughout my life. Only then did I learn that nuts were no good for your body.

So, does that mean no peanut butter either?

That’s correct. Step aside PB&J.

Olive Oil

The problem with olive oil is the first and last part of the food. The first word being “olive”, which is not an animal product. Olives are a fruit.

The second word is “oil” is another type of food that we want to avoid on the carnivore diet.

Pork

Yes, you can eat pork on the carnivore diet.

In fact, Pork Rinds are one of the go-to snacks in the carnivore diet. If you’re just starting out, it’s recommended that you keep some in stock. If you get a little hungry or are experiencing food cravings, having pork rinds will be your savior.

Sausage

For sausage, the same philosophy with eating hot dogs applies, eating sausages on the carnivore diet is fine, just remember that it’s processed. Sausage is a meat product that’s made from different kinds of ground meat which include beef, pork, or poultry. These are all animal products which means sausage can be eaten with the carnivore diet. Sausage has plenty of fat and salt as well making it one of the better sources for the meat diet compared to a meat like chicken since chicken has very little fat.

Shrimp

Shrimp is fish, fish are animal products. Enjoy dipping your baby shrimp in melted butter and shrimp kabobs.

Spinach

Say goodbye to spinach, lettuce, and all other foods in your typical salad. if you’re new and aren’t completely sold on the idea of eating nothing but meat. At least go 30 days eating meat only. Then see how you feel. Then add one or two foods back in to see how those foods affect your body.

You can’t tell how a food or drink is really effecting you physically until you remove it from your diet completely, then add it back in by itself.

You’ll learn more about your body in two months than most people learn in their lifetimes.

Spices

For spices, salt and pepper will be your essential spices. Salt is incredibly good for us and we need more sodium than the general public thinks. Now, that doesn’t mean you should go eat two Chipolte bowls a day that packs thousands of mg of sodium in a bowl.

We need salt. Salt and pepper on every steak and definitely on your eggs if you’re eating them.

Tuna

Tuna is good to eat as well since it’s fish. Just be mindful not to overeat with tuna because of the higher mercury levels.

Yogurt

Yogurt is milk, so yes can you eat yogurt on the carnivore diet. However, a word of caution. Nearly every yogurt in existence is loaded with sugar. Find some without any sugar if you’re going to include yogurt in your diet.

Cheese

As far as what cheese can you eat on the carnivore diet specifically, cheese that doesn’t have sugar added into it. Sharp cheddar is a good choice, it’s what I usually eat.

Cheese is another go-to food on this diet, especially for surviving your first 30 days eating only meat. Cheese has a lot of saturated fat which will help you reach your fat content, just like butter. When you get cravings, grab some cheese or pork rinds. Or both. I still eat cheese on a regular basis.

Vegetables

This is coming from someone who used to eat a ton of vegetables. Lots of broccoli in my days. So can you eat vegetables on the carnivore diet? At least, in the beginning, try not eating vegetables. Just meat, salt, and water.

After 30 days or so, see how you feel. Then slowly incorporate vegetables back into your meals if you want. Jordan Peterson for one, even broccoli triggers negative symptoms for him.

Carbs

Someone also asked me whether or not you can eat carbs on the carnivore diet.  To answer that briefly and attempting to do so with grace (trying to not go off on an hour-long verbal rampage). No. That’s the point. Carbohydrates are the poison. Carbs make you tired. Carbs make your gut twist and turn like a game of Twister.

Conclusion

Hopefully, this guide answered your questions for a few of the things you can eat on the carnivore diet. There are many things you cannot eat on this diet, and for good reason. Most things in general, are no good. Find the few things that are good. The few things that are important and produce the majority of your results for your health, your energy, and everything else. Only do those activities and your results will skyrocket.

Do you eat any of these foods on the meat-only diet?

About Victor Townsend

After living a life of depression, chronic fatigue, and thinking that being tired all the time was just "the way it is". After exploring different diets I finally learned that inflammation is the cause of everything harmful to us. The carnivore diet simply reduces any chance of inflammation being brought into us to as low as possible. Which is why it works. I'm here to bring back our energy, our ability to focus, our lives.
